A plain-headed, small arboreal bird endemic to the Philippines, known for its habit of foraging by creeping up tree trunks. It has a relatively unadorned plumage.
Where to spot
Forests and forest edge, often in the canopy or mid-story, on islands such as Mindanao, Leyte, Samar, and Negros in the Philippines.
How to spot
Observe its nuthatch-like foraging, climbing up and down tree trunks and branches. Its plain head and overall less patterned plumage help distinguish it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours.
Like other rhabdornis, this species is thought to be an important pollinator or seed disperser for certain Philippine forest plants, in addition to its insectivorous diet.
