Spotted
The Double-banded Plover is a small, migratory shorebird endemic to New Zealand, though significant populations winter in Australia. It is notable for its distinct double breast bands.
Where to spot
Breeds in New Zealand (high country riverbeds and stony areas); migrates to coastal mudflats, estuaries, and beaches of New Zealand and southeastern Australia for winter.
How to spot
Scan stony riverbeds in New Zealand or coastal mudflats in Australia. Look for the two distinct black (or faded brown) breast bands. Listen for its high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Best observed in New Zealand during the austral summer for breeding plumage, and in Australia during the austral winter when many have migrated. Active during daylight.
During its non-breeding plumage, the distinct double breast bands can fade, making it harder to identify and sometimes confused with other plover species.
