Spotted
The Mountain Myzomela is a small, dark honeyeater endemic to New Guinea. It is characterized by its dusky plumage and preference for higher montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea, found in both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea. It inhabits montane forests and subalpine woodlands, typically at elevations above 1,500 meters.
How to spot
Identify by its small size, uniformly dark brown to blackish plumage, and slender, decurved bill. Its high-altitude habitat preference helps distinguish it. Look for it actively feeding in flowering trees and shrubs. Listen for thin, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, foraging for nectar and small insects. As a resident species within its specific montane habitat, it can be observed year-round.
This Myzomela is highly adapted to its cool, moist montane forest habitat, where it feeds on nectar from high-altitude flowering plants.
