Spotted
The Lead-colored Ptiloprora is a medium-sized honeyeater endemic to New Guinea. It is characterized by its rather plain, lead-grey plumage and faint streaking.
Where to spot
Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea, found in both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea. It inhabits montane forests, primarily in the mid-story and understory, at elevations from 1,400 to 2,800 meters.
How to spot
Look for its overall lead-grey plumage, often with faint streaking on the underparts, and a slender, decurved bill. It can be elusive, moving quietly through dense vegetation. Listen for its high-pitched, metallic calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, feeding on nectar, insects, and small fruits. As a resident species within its specific montane habitat, it can be observed year-round.
This species belongs to a genus of honeyeaters known as 'Ptiloprora', all of which are endemic to the highlands of New Guinea and characterized by longitudinal streaking.
