Spotted
The Little Woodpecker is a small species of Central Africa, characterized by its dull olive-brown upperparts, pale underparts, and a red crown in males. It is one of the smaller woodpeckers in its range.
Where to spot
Found in tropical moist broadleaf forests and forest edges in Central Africa, including parts of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, and Uganda.
How to spot
Look for its small size and duller plumage as it forages on smaller branches. Listen for its soft, higher-pitched calls and light pecking, which can be easily overlooked in the noisy forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its tropical habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more visible in the mornings.
Despite its size, this woodpecker is an active forager, often moving quickly over small branches and twigs to glean insects, making it a challenging but rewarding bird to observe.
