Spotted
The Hispaniolan Pauraque is a small and elusive nightjar endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. It is known for its cryptic, mottled plumage that provides excellent camouflage, and its strictly nocturnal habits.
Where to spot
Inhabits dry forests, pine forests, and scrublands across the island of Hispaniola, which comprises the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic calls at night in suitable forest habitats. Use a spotlight to scan for it perched on the ground or low branches, where its eyeshine might be visible.
When to spot
Active from dusk to dawn, when it emerges to forage for flying insects. It remains well-hidden during daylight hours.
This species is one of the smaller nightjars found in the Caribbean, making its already camouflaged form even harder to spot against the forest floor.
