The Magellanic Horned Owl is a large owl found in southern South America, often considered a subspecies or closely related to the Great Horned Owl. It inhabits open and semi-open habitats.

Southern South America, including Chile and Argentina, extending south to Tierra del Fuego, preferring open woodlands, scrublands, and rocky areas.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, low hooting calls, similar but distinct from the Great Horned Owl. Look for it perched on prominent rocky outcrops or trees, especially at dusk.

Nocturnal. Most active from dusk to dawn. Its calls are a good way to locate it after dark.
