Open grasslands, prairies, deserts, and agricultural areas throughout North and South America.
How to spot
Look for its distinctively long legs and upright posture near burrow entrances. Its bobbing head movements and sharp alarm calls are also good indicators of its presence.
When to spot
Primarily crepuscular (dawn/dusk) and diurnal. Can be observed during the day standing at the entrance of its burrow or perched on a low mound.
