The Lazuline Sabrewing is a stunning hummingbird named for the brilliant lazuline (azure) blue coloration on the male's throat and breast. It is a highly attractive species of the Andean cloud forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits the humid montane and cloud forests of the Andes in Colombia and western Venezuela, typically at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters.
How to spot
Search for it feeding at flowering trees and shrubs in the mid-story and canopy of cloud forests, forest edges, and clearings. The male's striking blue throat is an unmistakable identification feature.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year in its Andean habitat. Early morning and late afternoon are generally optimal for observations.
