Spotted
The Bearded Mountaineer is a remarkable and unmistakable hummingbird, famed for its extraordinary elongated tail feathers and a conspicuous, shaggy white beard. This species is a true icon of the high Peruvian Andes, adapted to life in montane forests and scrub.
Where to spot
Endemic to the central Andes of Peru, primarily found in the regions of Junín, Pasco, and Huánuco. It inhabits humid montane forest, elfin forest, and dense scrub, typically at elevations between 2,800 and 4,000 meters (9,200-13,100 feet).
How to spot
Its identification is straightforward due to its uniquely long, spatula-tipped outer tail feathers and the prominent white 'beard' on its chin. The body plumage is primarily green. Look for it feeding at flowering shrubs, often perching conspicuously to display its tail. Its flight can appear somewhat cumbersome due to its long tail.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours. Best observed in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging activity is highest. They are often seen near specific flowering plants that provide their nectar source.

The Bearded Mountaineer's extremely long, spatula-tipped tail feathers are primarily used for display during courtship, making it one of the most visually striking hummingbirds during mating rituals.
