The Great-billed Hermit is a very large and distinctive hummingbird, characterized by its exceptionally long, strongly decurved bill and prominent facial markings. It is one of the largest members of the hermit family.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, particularly in the understory and along forest edges, widely distributed across the Amazon basin and the Guiana Shield in South America.
How to spot
Its large size and exceptionally long, decurved bill are unmistakable identification features. Look for it hovering silently near flowering plants or perched low in the dense forest.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but particularly visible during morning and late afternoon hours when foraging along established trap-lines.
