Spotted
A stunning hummingbird of the Andes, the Amethyst-throated Sunangel is recognizable by the male's vibrant, shimmering amethyst or purple gorget. Females have less prominent coloration but share the species' graceful flight.
Where to spot
Humid montane cloud forests and their edges, from southern Colombia through Ecuador and Peru, typically at mid to high elevations (2,000-3,500m).
How to spot
Look for them at feeders in lodges or in areas with fuchsia, bromeliads, and other tubular flowers. Listen for their high-pitched calls which can indicate their presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident within its range. Most active during the day, particularly mornings and late afternoons when flowers are most productive.
