Spotted
The Cebu Magpie-Robin is an endangered and highly localized species, known for its predominantly black plumage. It is a critically important bird for conservation efforts on the island of Cebu.
Where to spot
Critically endangered and endemic to the island of Cebu in the central Philippines. It is found only in a few fragmented limestone forest patches and degraded secondary growth.
How to spot
Requires dedicated effort and local knowledge. Search for it in the remaining patches of suitable forest on Cebu. Listen for its unique vocalizations, as it is often heard before it is seen, moving discreetly in the undergrowth.
When to spot
A resident species, observed year-round. Given its rarity, any sighting is significant. Early morning is often the best time to try and locate it by its calls.
One of the rarest birds in the world, the Cebu Magpie-Robin was once thought to be extinct until its rediscovery. Its survival depends entirely on the protection of its remaining forest habitat.
