The Hooded Wheatear is a distinctive desert species, with males boasting a striking black hood and wings, contrasting with a white body and rump. Females are brownish.
Where to spot
Found in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, including parts of Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, inhabiting rocky desert and wadi areas.
How to spot
Search in rocky desert terrain, particularly wadis and hillsides. Look for it perching prominently on rocks. The male's bold black and white pattern is unmistakable, and its tail-flicking is characteristic.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day. Best observed during spring when breeding activity is higher.
