Where to spot
Found in the mountains of Southeast Asia, including parts of northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It prefers the undergrowth of evergreen and mixed montane forests.
How to spot
Look for its striking blue and rufous colors (male). It typically forages in dense cover, making it somewhat challenging to spot. Listen for its distinctive, often repeated, soft calls or short whistles.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round, though some local altitudinal movements might occur. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
Named after Eugene W. Oates, a British naturalist and ornithologist, this species represents the rich avian diversity found in the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia.
