Nelson's Yellowthroat is a small, vibrant warbler with bright yellow underparts, olive-green upperparts, and a black facial mask in males. It is closely related to and often confused with other yellowthroat species.
Where to spot
Endemic to the highlands of central Mexico, primarily in Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Michoacán.
How to spot
Look in dense undergrowth, brushy clearings, and along streams in pine-oak and cloud forests at high elevations. It often forages low. Listen for its distinctive song, which can help differentiate it from other yellowthroats.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its resident montane forest habitats. Most vocal during the local breeding season.
