The Hooded Parrot is a striking parrot species endemic to the Northern Territory of Australia. Males have a distinctive black 'hood' or cap, bright blue wings, and yellow underparts with an orange belly patch.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia, found in open woodlands and savannas, particularly those with termite mounds.
How to spot
Look for the male's prominent black hood and bright blue wings. Females are duller. Scan for termite mounds, as these are critical nesting sites. Listen for its high-pitched, whistled calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen foraging on the ground or in low vegetation. Most visible during the breeding season when near termite mounds. Resident species.
This parrot species has a unique breeding strategy where it nests exclusively in termite mounds, digging out chambers within the hardened structure for its eggs and chicks.
