The Hooded Crane (Grus monacha) is a medium-sized, elegant crane found in East Asia, characterized by its slate-grey body, white head and neck, and a distinctive dark red patch around its eye. It is a migratory species.
Where to spot
Breeds in central and eastern Siberia, wintering mainly in Japan, but also in China and South Korea. Inhabits open wetlands, marshes, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Look for its grey body contrasting with the white head and neck, and the red patch near its eye. They are often seen in large flocks in open wetlands. Listen for their loud, clear bugling calls.
When to spot
Best observed during winter (November-March) at its main wintering grounds, especially Izumi, Japan. Breeding areas are often remote and less accessible.
