Spotted
The Common Crane is a large, majestic bird with a stately presence, known for its grey plumage, black and white markings on the head and neck, and a distinctive red patch on its crown. They often gather in spectacular migratory flocks.
Where to spot
Breeds across Northern Europe and Asia, migrating to Southern Europe, North Africa, and Southern Asia for winter. Inhabits extensive wetlands, bogs, forests, and agricultural fields.
How to spot
Its large size, grey body, and the black and white stripe on the neck leading to a red crown patch are key identifiers. In flight, they appear very stately with slow, powerful wingbeats. Listen for their loud, far-carrying trumpeting calls, especially when in flight or large groups.
When to spot
Most visible during spring and autumn migrations when large flocks can be seen and heard at major staging posts. Breeding birds can be observed in spring and summer in their remote wetland habitats. Wintering flocks are also observable.

Common Cranes engage in elaborate and highly synchronized courtship dances, involving bowing, leaping, and throwing grass into the air, which strengthens pair bonds and can occur at any time of year, not just breeding season.
