Spotted
The Demoiselle Crane is the smallest of the cranes, known for its elegant grey plumage, black neck and breast, and long white ear tufts. It is a highly migratory species.
Where to spot
Breeds across Central Asia and parts of Eastern Europe, migrating to India and parts of Africa for the winter. Favors open dry grasslands, steppes, semi-deserts, and agricultural fields.
How to spot
Its smaller size, combination of grey body, black neck/breast, and prominent white ear tufts make it distinctive. Look for them foraging in open areas or performing their graceful courtship dances. Listen for their high-pitched, trumpeting calls.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration periods at stopover sites. Breeding occurs from late spring to summer in its northern range. During winter, they can be seen in large flocks in their southern habitats.
