The Himalayan Flameback is a vibrant woodpecker species, noted for its golden-yellow back and prominent red crest in males. It is a resident of forested hills and woodlands in the Himalayan foothills.
Where to spot
Found across the Himalayan foothills and surrounding regions, including northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and parts of China. Inhabits various forest types and woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive golden-yellow back and the male's red crest. Listen for its loud, rattling or laughing calls and resonant drumming on tree trunks. Scan large, mature trees.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round in its non-migratory range. Early mornings are typically productive for sightings and hearing its calls.
