Spotted
The Indian Pygmy Woodpecker is a tiny, active woodpecker of the Indian subcontinent, distinguished by its small size, streaky brown and white plumage, and a reddish wash on the hindcrown of males.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Indian subcontinent, found in open woodlands, scrub forests, orchards, and gardens, often in areas with scattered trees.
How to spot
Look for its minute size and busy movements as it probes crevices on tree trunks and small branches. Listen for its high-pitched, rapid 'chip-chip' calls and soft, rapid drumming. It often mixes with other small birds.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its range. Active during daylight hours, often more conspicuous in the early mornings as it forages.
Despite its small size, this woodpecker can be quite vocal, especially during the breeding season, using a range of calls to communicate within its territory.
