Spotted
The Nene is a medium-sized goose endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, recognized by its black head and neck with distinctive furrows. It is the world's rarest goose species, a symbol of Hawaiian conservation.
Where to spot
Exclusively found on the Hawaiian Islands, particularly Maui, Kaua'i, and Hawai'i (Big Island). Look in grasslands, shrublands, and even golf courses.
How to spot
Nene are often found grazing in open areas. Look for their upright posture, the unique furrowed neck, and their tendency to be less wary than other goose species due to ongoing conservation efforts.
When to spot
Nene can be observed year-round in their native habitats. Their breeding season typically occurs from October to March.

Unlike most geese, the Nene has reduced webbing between its toes, an adaptation for walking on rough lava flows rather than swimming extensively.
