The Halmahera Oriole is a striking bird endemic to the island of Halmahera in Indonesia, known for its brilliant yellow and black plumage. It is a common and vocal inhabitant of the island's forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to Halmahera Island in the North Maluku Islands of Indonesia. Inhabits lowland and montane forests, often in primary forest.
How to spot
Males are typically bright yellow with black wings and tail, and often a black mask or head markings. Females are duller. Listen for its loud, clear, and melodious fluty calls, characteristic of orioles.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the early mornings and late afternoons, particularly during the breeding season.
Its isolated island existence has led to distinct evolutionary paths, making it a unique species found nowhere else in the world.
