Spotted
The Rufous-backed Oriole is a striking passerine bird, closely related to the Maroon Oriole. Males exhibit a beautiful contrast of deep rufous-maroon and black plumage, while females are typically duller and greener.
Where to spot
Found across mountainous regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of the Himalayas, Indochina, and the Greater Sunda Islands, inhabiting evergreen and broadleaf forests.
How to spot
Listen for their clear, melodious whistles emanating from the upper canopy. Look for movement among the leaves, and use binoculars to confirm identification of their striking plumage.
When to spot
Year-round in their resident range, with increased vocal activity during the breeding season, which varies locally.
Despite its vibrant coloration, this oriole can be surprisingly difficult to spot in the dense forest canopy, often revealed only by its distinctive, flute-like calls.
