Spotted
The Gulf Coast Mottled Duck, *Anas fulvigula maculosa*, is the western subspecies of the Mottled Duck, inhabiting the coastal regions of the central and western Gulf of Mexico. It is distinguished by slightly paler plumage than its eastern counterpart.
Where to spot
Distributed along the Gulf Coast of the United States, from Alabama west to Texas, and extending into northeastern Mexico. It favors coastal prairies, brackish marshes, and freshwater wetlands.
How to spot
Look for a Mottled Duck with a plain brown body, dark crown, and orange-yellow bill. While subtle, it may appear slightly paler brown than the Florida subspecies. Key features include the blue or purplish speculum bordered primarily by black, with little to no white.
When to spot
A year-round resident within its defined range. Its presence is consistent regardless of the season.
This subspecies faces significant conservation challenges, primarily from widespread hybridization with introduced or feral Mallards, which threatens its genetic purity and long-term viability in its native range.
