The Southern Andean Teal is the nominate subspecies of the Andean Teal, found in the central and southern parts of the Andes. It is a small, resident dabbling duck well-suited to the extreme conditions of its high-elevation habitat.

High-elevation wetlands, lakes, and marshes in the central and southern Andes, including Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile/Argentina.
How to spot
Look for a small, plain-looking duck with a dark bill, usually found on clear mountain lakes. Observe its typical dabbling behavior and relatively quiet demeanor compared to other waterfowl.
