Spotted
The Grey-streaked Flycatcher (*Muscicapa griseisticta*) is a migratory Asian flycatcher, named for the fine grey streaking on its breast and flanks. It has a relatively long tail and a somewhat upright posture.
Where to spot
Breeds in northeastern Asia, including Siberia, Korea, and Japan. It migrates south to winter across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Guinea. Inhabits woodlands, forests, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its streaked breast, greyish-brown plumage, and upright posture. Watch for its characteristic sallying flights to catch insects. Listen for its soft, thin calls.
When to spot
Best observed during its breeding season (late spring/summer) in its northern range, or during spring and autumn migration when it can be seen at various stopover sites. Wintering birds are present from late autumn to early spring.
This species is known for its 'sallying' foraging technique, where it perches and darts out to catch insects in mid-air before returning to the same or a nearby perch.
