Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, from Afghanistan to Indonesia, inhabiting open grasslands, scrubland, cultivation, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for it perching prominently on the tops of bushes, fence posts, or low trees in open country. The male's bold black and white pattern is unmistakable. Listen for its characteristic calls and short, tuneful song.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most of its range. Active throughout the day, often seen perched conspicuously.
This species has a distinctive, sharp 'chak' call, often repeated rapidly, which is easily recognizable in its habitat.
