A medium-sized woodpecker similar to the European Green Woodpecker but with a distinctive grey head, a relatively small red patch on the male's forehead, and a yellowish rump. Its call is more melancholic.
Where to spot
Found across central and eastern Europe and temperate Asia. Inhabits mature deciduous or mixed forests, often near wetlands or in older parks and orchards.
How to spot
Differentiate from Green Woodpecker by its grey head and less vibrant green plumage. Listen for its mournful, fluting 'kleeu-kleeu-kleeu' call, which is very distinct from the Green Woodpecker's laugh.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring) when its distinctive call is frequently heard.

While visually similar to the European Green Woodpecker, the Grey-headed Woodpecker generally prefers slightly denser, older forests and often forages higher in trees, though it also eats ants on the ground.
