A small and vibrant hummingbird characterized by its glittering green plumage and the male's distinctive long, forked green tail. It inhabits the tropical forests of the Chocó region.
Where to spot
Humid tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, and clearings, primarily in the Chocó biogeographic region of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, and western Panama. Found from sea level to 1,200 meters.
How to spot
Look for them at low to mid-levels in the forest, visiting small flowers. They are often found near streams or wet areas. Listen for their high-pitched calls, which can help in locating them.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active when feeding on nectar from small flowers in the forest understory or at the edges.
