Spotted
The Mangrove Whistler is a specialized songbird found in coastal mangrove forests across Southeast Asia. Its cryptic plumage allows it to blend into the dense mangrove habitat.
Where to spot
Distributed in coastal mangrove forests across Southeast Asia, including parts of Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines.
How to spot
Look for its dull grey-brown plumage, often with a paler throat. Its call is a loud, ringing whistle, often heard echoing through the mangroves, which is a key way to locate this elusive bird.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during low tide when it can forage for invertebrates among the exposed mud and roots. Most vocal in early morning.
This species is a true mangrove specialist, rarely venturing far from these unique coastal ecosystems, and has adapted to foraging among the roots and branches.
