Spotted
The Greater Yellow-headed Vulture is a large New World vulture inhabiting humid tropical and subtropical forests of the Americas. It is a vital scavenger, contributing to the decomposition of organic matter.
Where to spot
Primarily found in the Amazon Basin and other tropical rainforests of South America, extending into parts of Central America.
How to spot
Look for its striking yellow, orange, and blue-green head. Often seen soaring high above the rainforest canopy or perching on emergent trees; its flight is more buoyant and less flappy than other vultures.
When to spot
Active during daylight, particularly from mid-morning to late afternoon when thermals are present for soaring above the canopy.
