A magnificent and very large New World vulture, one of the largest flying birds in the world, found in the Andes Mountains of South America. It has glossy black plumage with a white ruff and white patches on its wings.

High Andean mountains, grasslands, and deserts, often near rocky cliffs for roosting and nesting, throughout South America.
How to spot
Look for its enormous size, glossy black plumage, distinctive white ruff around its neck, and white patches on the upper wings (especially in males).
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during daylight hours, soaring high over mountain ranges or perched on rocky outcrops.
