Spotted
An iconic and critically endangered New World vulture, the largest land bird in North America, known for its massive size, bare orange head, and black plumage.
Where to spot
Remote mountainous regions, canyons, and open scrubland in California, Arizona (USA), and Baja California (Mexico), mainly within reintroduction areas.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, bare orange head (adults) or dark head (juveniles), and white patches under the wings (visible in flight). Spotting scopes are often useful due to their high flight.
When to spot
Year-round in release areas. Best observed during daylight hours, often soaring high on thermals.

The California Condor once faced extinction, with only 22 individuals remaining in the wild in 1982. An intensive captive breeding and reintroduction program has brought it back from the brink.
