Spotted
The Great Barbet is the largest species within the Asian barbet family, characterized by its robust build, olive-green body, and a distinctive blue head with red markings. It is a powerful fruit eater.
Where to spot
Humid broadleaf forests, woodlands, and subtropical montane forests across the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to Vietnam.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, ringing, and often repetitive 'piu-piu-piu-puu' calls, which are a strong indicator of its presence. Scan the mid to upper canopy of large trees.
When to spot
Year-round; most vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season (March to July).

Despite its large size, the Great Barbet can be surprisingly hard to spot due to its preference for high canopy and its tendency to remain motionless, blending with the foliage. Its loud call, however, is unmistakable.
