Spotted
The Grey-throated Rail is a secretive rail species found in the dense forests of West and Central Africa. It is characterized by its grey throat and face, reddish-brown upperparts, and barred flanks. It typically inhabits swampy or wet forest undergrowth and is rarely seen.
Where to spot
Found in the tropical forests of West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone east to Uganda and south to Angola. It prefers dense, wet lowland and gallery forests, often near streams or swamps.
How to spot
Look for its grey throat and face contrasting with a reddish-brown back. Its cryptic plumage and secretive habits make it very difficult to see. Detection relies heavily on its distinctive calls, which include loud, repeated 'kow-wow' notes or a deep booming 'wup-wup-wup.'
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active at dawn and dusk, when it might be heard or briefly glimpsed.
This rail is one of the more arboreal members of its family, sometimes perching low in trees or on fallen logs, though it primarily forages on the forest floor.
