Spotted
The Grassland Yellow Finch is a small, widespread finch characterized by its streaky yellowish-brown plumage, making it well-camouflaged in its preferred open grassland habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across grasslands, savannas, and agricultural fields in South America, from Colombia south to Argentina, also present in parts of Central America, typically below 2,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open grassy areas. It can be hard to spot when perched due to its streaky plumage, so listening for its song or watching for its display flight is often the best way to find it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Males are more conspicuous during the breeding season when performing their distinctive display flights.
