Spotted
The Woodpecker Finch is one of the most remarkable of Darwin's Finches, endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is a medium-sized bird with drab plumage, but its unique tool-using behavior sets it apart.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Galápagos Islands, found on several of the larger islands including Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz, and Santiago. Prefers humid highland forests and transition zones.
How to spot
Look for its medium size and dull, streaky plumage. Observe closely for its distinctive tool-using behavior; it may drop a tool and then pick it up again. Listen for its simple, somewhat wheezy song.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during the morning when insects are active and the finches are foraging.

This extraordinary bird is famous for using small twigs, cactus spines, or leaf stems as tools to extract insects from tree bark and crevices, a rare example of tool use in the animal kingdom.
