Spotted
The Black-backed Bush Tanager is a neat, active tanager found in humid montane forests of the Andes. It is recognized by its dark black back and contrasting lighter underparts.
Where to spot
Humid montane cloud forests and forest edges in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru, generally between 1,800 and 3,200 meters.
How to spot
Look for it as part of mixed flocks. Scan the mid-story to sub-canopy layers of the forest. Listen for its characteristic calls within the flock to help narrow down its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging.
This tanager often joins mixed-species flocks, moving through the mid-story and canopy of the forest, which can make it easier to locate when birding in dense Andean cloud forests.
