Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and adjacent mountain ranges across Central Asia, including Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, and Nepal, typically at very high altitudes in alpine meadows and rocky slopes.
How to spot
Look for the males' brilliant iridescent blue color and the females' plainer grey-brown. Spot them in large flocks on open, high-altitude slopes. Their undulating flight is also distinctive.
When to spot
Best observed during summer in high-altitude breeding grounds; in winter, they descend to slightly lower elevations. Look for them during daylight hours.
