The Grand Comoro Scops Owl is a critically endangered owl endemic to Grand Comoro Island in the Comoros. It is a secretive species restricted to montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to Grand Comoro Island (Ngazidja), Comoros. Inhabits humid montane forests on the slopes of Mount Karthala.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted montane forest habitat. Primarily identified by its distinctive, deep 'hoo' call. Requires dedicated nocturnal searches at higher elevations.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observations are exceptionally rare.
This owl's population is extremely small and highly threatened by habitat loss from volcanic activity and human encroachment, making it one of the world's most vulnerable owl species.
