The Indian Scops Owl is a small, well-camouflaged owl common across the Indian subcontinent. It is a nocturnal hunter of insects and small vertebrates, often found near human habitation.
Where to spot
Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka) and parts of Southeast Asia. Inhabits open woodlands, scrub, gardens, and urban areas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, soft, hollow 'whuk-whuk' or 'kwok-kwok' call, often repeated. Look for its small size, mottled brown plumage, and prominent ear tufts. Spotlighting or checking tree hollows at night.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, most vocal at dusk and before dawn.
