Spotted
As its name suggests, the Goliath Coucal is the largest species within the coucal genus, a truly massive and impressive bird found exclusively in the Philippines. It is characterized by its entirely black plumage.
Where to spot
Confined to the Philippines, primarily found in lowland and montane rainforests, dense secondary growth, and swampy areas with extensive thick vegetation.
How to spot
Look for its immense size and all-black, often slightly glossy, plumage. It typically skulks in very dense vegetation, but its deep, resonant calls can carry far through the forest, indicating its presence.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, most easily observed during early mornings or late afternoons when it may be more vocal or briefly venture into more open areas.

The Goliath Coucal is one of the heaviest flying cuckoos in the world, preferring to move through dense undergrowth with powerful hops and short, labored flights, rather than sustained aerial movement.
