Spotted
The Groove-billed Ani is a social cuckoo easily distinguished from its relatives by the series of characteristic grooves on its upper mandible. Like other anis, it displays remarkable communal breeding behavior, with multiple birds contributing to a shared nest.
Where to spot
Found from southern Texas (USA) south through Central America to northern South America, and also present in parts of the Caribbean. Inhabits open and semi-open habitats, including savannas, clearings, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Look for small, noisy flocks foraging on the ground or perched conspicuously on low branches. A clear view of the bill is essential to observe the diagnostic grooves. Their calls are often a sharp 'tii-ick' or a plaintive 'pee-o' note.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most of its range, active during daylight hours. Often seen foraging on the ground after livestock.
