The Golden-spotted Ground-Dove is a small, striking dove of the high Andes, named for the iridescent golden or bronze spots on its wing-coverts. Its overall plumage is grey-brown with a pinkish flush on the breast.
Where to spot
Found in the high Andes from southern Peru through Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. Inhabits arid puna grasslands, rocky slopes, and high-altitude scrub.
How to spot
Look for its relatively long tail and, most importantly, the iridescent golden or bronze spots on its wings, which are a key identification feature. It forages on the ground in open areas, often in small groups.
