The Eastern Ground Parrot is a unique, mostly terrestrial parrot endemic to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Its cryptic green and black plumage provides excellent camouflage in its heathland habitat.
Where to spot
Inhabits heathlands, wet heaths, and button grass plains in coastal southeastern Australia and Tasmania.
How to spot
Observation is challenging due to its secretive nature. Look for its low, rapid flight when flushed from cover. Listen for its distinctive high-pitched whistle or 'tinkling bell' call, particularly at twilight.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk when foraging for seeds and plant material. Can be very elusive during the day.
