The Golden-eared Tanager is a striking bird, largely black with bright turquoise-blue shoulders and a distinctive golden-yellow patch behind its eye. It is a gem of the Andean cloud forests.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, from southern Colombia south to northern Peru.
How to spot
Look for it in mixed-species flocks moving through the mid-to-upper canopy. Its bright blue shoulders and golden ear patch are unmistakable.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the morning.
