The Yellow-billed Cardinal is a handsome species from the Neotropics, characterized by its bright red head and black bib, complemented by a stout, yellowish bill.
Where to spot
Found in northern South America, extending from eastern Colombia and Venezuela through the Guianas and northern Brazil, south to eastern Peru and northern Bolivia. Inhabits open areas near water, riparian zones, and semi-open woodlands.
How to spot
Look along the edges of rivers, lakes, and marshes. They often perch on low branches or forage on the ground. Their yellowish bill is a key identification mark. Listen for their clear, whistled song.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its range. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon.
