The Golden-billed Saltator is a vibrant and common songbird found across central and western South America. It is instantly recognizable by its bright orange or yellow bill, contrasting with its grey head, olive-green back, and grey underparts.
Where to spot
Widespread in western and central South America, including Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. Inhabits dry scrub, forest edges, open woodlands, gardens, and agricultural areas.
How to spot
Look for its unmistakable bright orange or yellow bill. Listen for its loud, clear, ringing song, a series of whistled notes often delivered from an exposed perch. It is often seen in pairs or small groups.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (varies regionally) and during early morning.
